History

Our History

Since 1992, Shertech has been providing low energy and PET radiopharmaceuticals to the Carolinas. Over 90 hospitals and outpatient centers are supported by our regional network of nuclear pharmacies. Through our partnership and affiliation with our customers, Shertech Pharmacy has expanded our deliverables past radiopharmaceuticals to include radiation safety services, clinical consultation, hazardous waste management and specialty ancillary supplies. Shertech added a cyclotron facility in 2006 to provide Positron Emission Tomography (PET) radiopharmaceuticals and services so that area physicians could more effectively manage patient disease with this advanced imaging technology.

Our Facilities

Shertech Pharmacy has structured our facilities to be highly responsive to meet customer demands. Board certified nuclear pharmacists work in accredited pharmacies that meet individual state boards of pharmacy USP <797> clean room regulations. Bureau of Radiological Health regulations are followed under a strong corporate radiation safety program. The pharmacies adhere to an intense infection control program within both our custom compounding process and waste management programs.

Greenville & Easley 


Rick started Shertech Pharmacy in February 1992 after opening four nuclear pharmacies for national chain pharmacies. Since opening, Shertech has grown to include five pharmacies and a cyclotron. Rick mainly practices from the Greenville pharmacy, helping to guide the busy injection business that supplies every major hospital in the area. He graduated from Purdue University, earning a degree in Pharmacy with a specialization in nuclear pharmacy. With over 30 years of experience in the field, Rick is an expert in the industry and serves on the Board of Directors for United Pharmacy Partners (UPPI).

Tony received his BS from Murray State University before completing his pharmacy degree at the University of Kentucky. He began his career at a retail pharmacy but Tony enjoys the daily challenges presented to him as a nuclear pharmacist. Tony joined Shertech as a nuclear pharmacist in 1998. Outside of work, Tony enjoys cycling throughout the upstate.

Chris is a graduate of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy where he earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy degree. While at MUSC he also studied nuclear pharmacy and acquired his authorized user training. Since coming on board with Shertech in 2012, Chris has provided excellent customer care and quality service as one of Shertech Easley’s nuclear pharmacist.  In his free time Chris enjoys hiking, camping, and exploring the upstate with his family and friends.

Jai received his PharmD and Nuclear Pharmacy specialty training from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy in 2013.  He began working for Shertech shortly after graduation. Nuclear pharmacy has been a long time passion and pursuit for Jai and he is able to implement his expertise and knowledge though Shertechs nuclear pharmacy.  In his free time, Jai enjoys spending time with his family.

Charlotte NC

Karen is a graduate of Purdue University and has worked in the nuclear pharmacy industry since 1980.  As a co-founder of Shertech Pharmacy, she has worked to open each location and helped train personnel.  As an active member of United Pharmacy Partners, Inc, the Independent Nuclear Pharmacy group, she has actively recruited and promoted nuclear pharmacists around the country.  Karen served on the South Carolina Society of Nuclear Medicine Board of Directors for 6 years, serving as Secretary for two years and Legislative Chair for 4 years.  She also served on the South Carolina Radiation Quality Standards Association (SCRQSA) as a Board member.  SCRQSA is a Legislative mandated group that oversees the certification of all technologists that delivery ionizing radiation.  Currently Karen is on the Board of Trustees for the local community blood bank – The Blood Connection that services North and South Carolina.  She also enjoys working as an advisor to collegians at Clemson University and is an active member of the P.E.O. Rich earned his Pharmacy Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He trained at The Ohio State University to gain experience in Nuclear Pharmacy.  Rich enjoys golfing and fishing as much as possible in his spare time.

Cierra is a graduate of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy.  She attended the Columbia, SC campus and graduated as an authorized user from their nuclear pharmacy tract.  Cierra manages our Kernersville, NC facility which provides service to the local nuclear medicine community and also provides compounded medications to local hospitals, veterinary clinics, integrative medicine practices, and also to the general public in the Triad area of North Carolina.

He, now, has a nuclear and compounding pharmacy practice serving hospitals, clinics, the veterinary community, and the general public in the Winston-Salem area with their medical needs.

Rusty graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in pharmacy.  He attained his nuclear training at Purdue University.   Soon after starting his career, Rusty became interested in the compounding specialty and has received advanced training over the years with PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America).  In 1999, Rusty was given the opportunity to join Shertech as a partner and manager of the Spartanburg facility. Since then, business has expanded as Shertech began servicing the compounding needs of the Upstate.

While counseling patients on their hormone and compounding needs, Rusty also participates in community Health Fairs, seminars and has given several Continuing Education talks for other health care professionals about the importance of compounding in health care.

Jonathan Babb

Jonathan Babb joined the Shertech team in 2008. During his pharmacy training at the Medical University of South Carolina he received specialized training in nuclear pharmacy. While working at Shertech, Jonathan received compounding training at PCCA. He enjoys practicing both nuclear and compounding pharmacy at the Shertech of Spartanburg location.

Careers with Shertech

The positions listed below are not advertised job openings. These jobs represent some of the available careers at Shertech Pharmacies.

 

Nuclear Pharmacist

A Nuclear Pharmacist at Shertech is responsible for compounding and dispensing radiopharmaceuticals on a prescription basis for diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of patients in hospitals and clinics.  The nuclear pharmacist must be a “qualified” professional achieving “Authorized User” status of radioactive material with the NRC or Agreement State.  A Nuclear Pharmacist will work with healthcare professionals providing clinical information related to radiopharmaceuticals, work within an established Radiation Safety Program and adhere to USP <797> clean room work standards.

Nuclear Pharmacist work schedules vary with early morning shifts, weekends, and “on call” responsibilities.  Blood handling techniques will be utilized along with Biohazard Waste Management responsibilities.  Shertech Pharmacists are expected to exceed the expectations of our customers and their patients.

Compounding Pharmacist

The Compounding Pharmacist will process, prepare, compound and fill medications, using standard formulas and processes and may supervise the processes and products produced by technicians. This pharmacist is responsible for verification of all outgoing product, reviewing all prescriptions to assure ingredients and dosage accuracy.

The Compounding Pharmacist also counsels pharmacy clients and patients regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, administration and storage of pharmaceuticals. The pharmacist will assist with ordering of supplies and inventory. There will also be responsibilities for maintaining proper procedures <797> compliant facility, proper procedures for aseptic compounding and maintaining security of all supplies.

The Compounding pharmacist will also assist in promoting the new pharmacy in the community, by working with medical professionals, speaking and appearing at events and assisting in other promotional activities.

Pharmacy Technician

A Pharmacy Technician will perform all duties under the direct supervision of a Nuclear Pharmacist.  Depending on technician training and credentialing, responsibilities would including prescription order entry, unit dose drawing, radiopharmaceutical QC, Equipment QC, DOT packaging and shipment, radiation safety duties and courier dispatching.

All Pharmacy Technicians are required to have state and national certification and may achieve “Authorized User” status based on experience and training within Shertech Pharmacy.  Work schedules will vary with early morning as well as day shifts Monday through Friday.

Clerical And Support Personnel – Shertech Pharmacy operations support positions in accounting, bookkeeping, safety compliance and facility secretarial support.  Each position has its own qualification with contribution toward outstanding customer service.  The team approach has been integral to Shertech Pharmacy’s success.

Bookkeeping, Office and Other

Shertech Pharmacy has office related positions as support to the nuclear pharmacies. There are bookkeeping and office positions, with rare openings.

Each position has its own qualifications, but the key to success at Shertech is dedication to customer service, eagerness to learn and a team attitude.

Courier

Shertech Pharmacy has chosen to operate its own delivery system to accomplish “on time” delivery of our time critical products.  In addition, the hazardous material shipping regulations allow for smoother compliance and fewer issues with corporate trained couriers.

Couriers must have an outstanding driving record for the last ten years and be able to lift up to 220 kilograms.  A valid state driver’s license (CDL not necessary) and strong computer and customer service skills are a must.  Working hours vary with very early morning shifts, weekends and “on call” response availability.
